Choose the right FM exciter kit

Choose an exciter by its inputs, frequency, output and required accessories—not just the wattage on the label.

Start with the job, not the power rating

An exciter creates the radio-frequency signal. In a small system it may feed the output filter and antenna directly. In a larger system it drives an amplifier. Decide which job yours will do before choosing its output power.

Decide how audio will enter

Some exciters accept ordinary left/right audio and include stereo encoding. Others accept an externally prepared MPX signal. Some configurations provide both routes. Match the selected option to your studio equipment, and avoid paying for a second encoder you do not need.

A hardware stereo encoder combines left and right audio into MPX. A computer-based generator is another possible route, but it requires compatible output hardware and calibration.

Match the exciter to the next stage

  • Confirm the operating frequency range.
  • For an amplifier, check required drive and maximum permitted input power. Too much drive can damage the next stage.
  • Check the supply voltage, current, cooling and control requirements of the exact board.
  • Confirm the connectors and the output filtering required for the complete installation.

A kit may be a populated board, a partly assembled package or a collection of parts. Read the selected purchase option and included-items list; “kit” does not mean a complete transmitter.

Make a complete parts list

Alongside the exciter, plan the power supply, enclosure, cooling, controls/display, interconnecting cables, output filter and suitable load. Identify what is included and what must be added. A higher-power amplifier also needs its own supply, cooling and protection.

Read the amplifier-pallet build checklist if you plan to add an RF power stage.
