An amplifier pallet is only the beginning

Plan the supply, cooling, filter, protection and testing that turn an RF amplifier pallet into a complete working system.

What a pallet does

An amplifier pallet increases the power of an RF signal supplied by an exciter. It is one stage of a transmitter, not a complete enclosed amplifier. Its output rating does not tell you the required mains supply, heatsink size or complete system cost.

Five things to specify together

  • Drive: match frequency, required input power and maximum permitted input.
  • Supply: use the exact voltage range and current capacity required by the pallet. Include protection and the manufacturer’s start-up procedure.
  • Cooling: follow mounting, thermal interface, heatsink and airflow requirements.
  • Output path: choose a filter, cables, connectors and load rated for the frequency and power.
  • Protection: include appropriate temperature, current and reflected-power protection for the complete system.

Why output filtering matters

An amplifier can produce unwanted signals as well as the wanted carrier. Suitable output filtering reduces harmonics before the antenna. The filter must suit the operating band and power; its insertion loss and thermal performance matter too.

Select a current filter from the supplier’s supported range. Do not reuse an old parts list without checking that the filter is still available and suitable for the chosen pallet.

Assembly details are product-specific

Use the actual pallet manual and connection diagram. Keep coaxial ground connections short and low-inductance, and follow the specified RF layout. This does not mean that every DC wire and cable must be made arbitrarily short.

Check mechanical mounting, insulation and the cooling arrangement before applying power. A photograph of a generic board is not a wiring guide.

Commission before connecting an antenna

Use the manufacturer’s start-up instructions, a suitable dummy load and appropriate measuring equipment. Begin at the specified drive level and verify current, output, temperature and unwanted emissions. If the work is outside your experience, have a qualified RF technician commission the assembly.

A power reading alone does not prove clean output or reliable operation. Check the complete system, including the filter and protection.

Build your enquiry

Send PCS the pallet model, frequency, intended output, available drive and planned supply/cooling. Include the enclosure and filter you intend to use. A complete proposed combination is much easier to check than a list of wattage figures.
