Stereo encoders and studio links: different jobs

Understand when you need a stereo encoder, when you need an STL, and how to plan compatible modules at each end.

By PCS Electronics · Updated 25 October 2026

Encoding and transport are different

A stereo encoder prepares left and right audio for an FM transmitter. A studio-to-transmitter link, or STL, carries a programme between locations. You may need both, one or neither, depending on the equipment you already have.

When a separate stereo encoder makes sense

A separate encoder can suit an exciter with an MPX input when your studio does not already produce MPX. Check input and output levels, supply requirements, RDS options and connector arrangements. An exciter with built-in encoding may remove the need for this extra board.

Studio transmitterLink antennasReceiver at transmitter site

A radio STL uses a matched transmitting and receiving arrangement to bridge the studio and broadcast site. STLMAX modules are building blocks for such a link; they are not a complete installation by themselves. Select compatible frequency and audio configurations at both ends.

A link can carry different signal formats depending on the equipment. Do not assume an audio link passes a complete MPX signal. Confirm whether it is intended for mono audio, stereo audio or composite MPX.

Plan the whole link

  • Frequency and authorisation for the link at the installation location.
  • Transmitter and receiver options that support the same signal format.
  • Antennas, mounting positions and a suitable path between sites.
  • Cable loss, connectors, power supplies, enclosures and weather protection.
  • A way to monitor the receiver and provide programme fallback if the link fails.

The studio link is separate from the broadcast coverage area. A successful link to a hilltop does not, by itself, predict where the public will receive the FM broadcast.

Bring the locations, required signal format and existing equipment to a compatibility discussion. If you do not want to integrate boards, ask about a ready-to-use link package and confirm exactly what is included.
